Least relaxing two days off i've had in ages. Yesterday, i slept late, that is, until 9. Went to DMV and got my driving record, went and got the speedometer calibrated, took 5 phone calls, cancelling 3 sets of plans for the day, and combining 2 others, missed another phone call, for which i must make amends. I've no clue how on earth i overbooked so much for the day, but there it was.
Today, i got up, went to the lawyers office, the courthouse, the lawyer's office, a bank, out to South Riding to have a first meeting with my latest Spanish language student, came back on 50/606, got carry-out at Anita's in Herndon, gave directions to the manager to get to south central PA via US15.
Charges of Reckless Driving were reduced to Speeding 15- 19 MPH above speed limit - EX55, and a $200 fine, $262 with court costs, which for some reason was $10 less than the signs said. *shrug* My first plea bargain. Yay for a cooperative Associate Commonwealth's Attorney.
This weekend, i work, and
benhill is out of town, so i work and have dog duty. Monday, i take
sagesaria to SSA to get a new social security card, and
tomhundleyrn will be joining us, then he and i will head into DC so he can get a birth cert, and i can get a new SmartTrip card, as my current one doesn't work.
Here's hoping for a quietish weekend at work. Sigh...

Tonight, various things. Mi comprensión oral de español mejora por mi trabajo, cual sea buena. My oral comprehension of Spanish is improving due to my job, which is good. Especially since they hired me for my Spanish skills. It's been a bit rough, as i've not had regular telephone practice with my Spanish since 1985.
I'm about ready to pick up on the cycle of poems i started in November. For some reason, only now do i feel ready to carry on with the project, which will occur over in
seain_scribbles, the community i set up for my writing. I wonder if i should move my personal essays over there. Likely, i will cross-post them, as i have more readership here, and not everyone wants to be part of helping me edit my writing. I shall make some new tags in this journal to better group personal essays and poems.
I've come to realise that my personal essays, some of which are properly vignettes, are really some of my strongest writing. I find that kind of odd, as i'm not one to talk about myself, which some of my friends are discovering as they're being interviewed for my Level 2 Clearance. One commented after her interview that she feels she knows me well, but doesn't really know about me. That did not surprise me, as that's rather how i am in general. I'm really rather introverted and shy, despite the face i present to the world.
Not that i never talk about my homosexuality, spirituality, kinks, and what, i just don't do it often, nor to a very large audience. One friend was shocked at first that i'd remade acquaintance with a charming man with whom we'd both gone to HS on a kink site. Her shock turned to pensiveness, leading her to comment as to whether all of us from the first couple of classes of that school had turned out queer and/or kinky. I posited all but one person, quite maybe...hmm...make that two people on further consideration.
I'm falling into the rhythm of the new job and its wack schedule. I'm enjoying it, and like my coworkers, though one of them knows not what to make of me, though i'm guessing that'll change as we work together more. Either that, or we'll maintain our professional relationship and never gel socially, which is cool. One cannot be social with everyone, though one can be pleasant with [most] everyone. I've also come to learn that i must be in bed not later than 22 if i want to be rested, functional, and focused for work. Lack of sleep makes me highly unfocussed.
The cats are doing well. Bunbun's been a bit skittish of late, but he goes through periods of that. I said hi to him earlier when i went up to get the cat bowls to wash so i could feed them, and he shot off like i was a threat. *shrug* He's cute, and cuddly when he wants. Very rabbitlike. :)
Right now i'm tired, a bit antsy, and wanting social interaction. So, sleep, a walk, and a conversation, though likely not in that order, are what i want right now. Likely i'll read a bit, fall asleep, get up in the wee hours, brush my teeth and go to bed. Guess i'll see. Maybe i'll be all grown-up and brush my teeth and go to bed to read. Stranger things have happened.
Oh! I've tried a couple of the wines i received for helping
bhanfhlaith move. Very nice so far, the ones i've had. Thank you for them. I've not yet opened the gallon of homemade mead. I look forward to that once the weather cools a bit, toward Samhain or so.
Oh, and a random tidbit: I was surprised to learn that my street address is unique in the US.
Peace unto you, my friend.

Hi. How Goes?
Jul. 29th, 2007 10:23 pmApologies in advance for my overtired and nearly-addled brain's lack of flow and coherence.
My mood, as
benhill observed, has improved since i started working. Structure to life is good.
I worked my first weekend, which was a gentle way to end up on the phones. M, D, and i make up the current Black Team Group II. Both M and D have been great about helping me with things. M works much harder than D, and i've been trying to learn from him, though there's much i may not do until my level 2 clearance comes through, which is some months off.
Monday and Tuesday i plan to, in no particular order: help
muzikmaker21 complete his move, get a haircut, see The Simpsons Movie, do 2 loads of laundry, and work 6 hours.
I learned today that IBM's time reporting tool requires me to enter hours in excess of 40 as overtime. I learned this because this is the first week in which i'll work more than 40 - looks like 54.
The cats, and the dog, were all very happy to see me today, and the rabbit did not run away when i gave him more kibble and hay.
Oh, and any of you have why the Spanish-speaking customers are always so much happier, or at least expressive of their happiness, with their dealings with me than the Anglophones and Francophones are?

Hey, yall. Quick update. Slow week for me at work, though i'm learning a lot.
Monday - listened to calls being handled, got a feel for general process
Tuesday - Got in was handed an email by a coworker n the middle of a call. Paper said to go to another facility to pick up my paperwork. So at 08:30 i went to that facility and got the paperwork. I identical paperwork to the piece of paper already in my hand. Took paper back to my facility and got a badge. Spent 2 hours with my manager learning a new process - then general training at yet another facility, happily one closer to home.
Today - On-line training, chatting, some explanations of the Level 1 [clearance] checklist - now 80% complete, more chatting and a nice lunch with a coworker from another facility. Spent some time seeing how a partial system-down is handled - a system-down that required reverting to paper for about 14 hours - i'm guessing - today at land ports of entry.
Tomorrow - More listening in on calls and learning how to do things.
I'm looking forward to the weekend. This days thing is tiring. I'm wondering if i'll get used to days just in time to start working nights. Guess we'll see. More on my schedule tomorrow or Friday.

Changes, and July Plans
Jul. 8th, 2007 10:33 pmFor those of you who've missed the news, my preliminary clearance came through on the 1st, and i start work tomorrow at 08:00. I have not a clue what my hours/days look like at this point. I will update with more details as i have it. Basic schedule is: Week B: Initially, i'm working days, but in the end will be working nights. Note that i work every other weekend.
I will be going to Baitcon, which i am very much looking forward to. Due to that, i am not working the 19th-24th, inclusive, this month.
Due to the work hours in Week A, i expect that i shall not have much time to check LJ that week, as to get as much sleep as i need, i technically have 3 hours a day that i'm neither at work nor asleep. Phone, SMS, and email will be the best ways to reach me. Comment, or otherwise ping me if you need that data.
This month will be interesting as i get into the rhythm of the job, though i expect it will be into Aug before i'm really into the swing of things.

Wednesday and Thursday
Jun. 28th, 2007 11:27 pmWednesday, i went up to the
nookery mid-afternoon, via White's Ferry, cause it was a nice day, chatted mith Marc some, and then
nosebeepbear and i went to see Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead at the AFI Silver in Silver Spring, MD. We got to go for free thanks to someone at my church giving me some member passes valid through the end of June. It was great fun seeing it, especially since i'd not seen the ending before, oddly.
Paused to get her a salad and me some fries at Wendy's, then back to The Nookery. Chatted with Marc until i passed out on the couch. Awoke there mid-day, and Marc made some lovely cous-cous, then we hit Giant and Magruder's, then i, for the first time ever, took White's Ferry from MD to VA. At 14:00, it's empty. First time i saw a bike on the ferry, too.
Headed to Hamilton to help
bhanfhlaith with her move to Atlanta. Packed up part of the kitchen, and helped empty the storage unit into the 24-foot truck. Went home, took a bath, and have been chilling. Tomorrow, i have evening plans, and hope to chill through the day, and take the dog for a long, leisurely walk.
In other news, my friend Tom's house was burnt down - total loss according to the fire dept - last night. He's in NC, the house in TN. He's dealing with insurance stuff, and plans to walk away.

Sacrificial Furniture
Jun. 25th, 2007 05:41 pmIn September 1975, when i was 4, my family moved to Dale City, VA. Not long after we moved in, a cat appeared at our back door. Mom let him in. The man from next door came looking for the cat later that day, from whom we learned the cat was named Amos. The next day, Amos was back. He hopped onto their AC unit, onto the fence, onto our AC unit, and appeared at our back door.
Pat and John, the neighbours who owned him, asked us to watch the cat during the day while they were at work. About 9 months later, they divorced, and we got the cat.
Amos was declawed, yet by the time he died in 1989, he'd worn threadbare the back right corner of the La-Z-boy by the couch.
( Furniture sacrifices to date ) Lorelei and i spent a whole day shopping for that slip cover some years ago - i was a bit sad to see it go.
I clip both cats', and the rabbit's, claws. Even with clipping their claws, Jasper has damaged now 3.25 pieces of furniture - i'm counting the slip cover as the 0.25. I consider this furniture damage as the expected sacrifice of owning cats. So let's see...3.25 into 14 means Jasper destroys 1 piece of furniture about every 4.33 years. Happily, the chairs will be easily reupholstered once he dies.

Tu ausencia me está abriendo un hueco....
Jun. 16th, 2007 11:53 pmFor the first time in many years, Father's Day is big-time on my radar this year. I think i need must take a trip out to the graveyard this month. After 21 years, the loss is still there, and tugging a bit harder than it has in some time. Probably a side effect of being less busy than usual for the time of year.
Tomorrow, i'm going to go help my friend L's mother get her house in order for her convalescence, as she gets here other knee replaced on Tuesday. It'll be nice to see Ms. Brown, even with her being a bit loopy on pain meds. Happily, as i'm not her child, i get my suggestions listened to a bit more, which makes helping her not quite as difficult.
(Uber bonus points to anyone who can identify the subject of this post.)

Court Update
Jun. 14th, 2007 05:35 pmWent to court today for the Reckless Driving and the expired inspection offences. Got a continuance to 23 Aug, and hired a lawyer; thanks to
sharrainchains for the reference. He's asked that i get my spedometer callibrated, which i shall do.
After court and the lawyer, i visited the Virginia Epmployment Commission, and was told that i can get a maximum of 4 weeks paid out onec i accept an offer, but i need an offer with a date ~4 weeks out. So must call employer to get that, or just go cashier again for a spell, as that would pay about the same as unemployment would.

Jun. 6th, 2007 01:44 amToday's mail brought a postcard from
melted_snowball. I wonder if the delay was on the Israeli Postal Authority or the USPS. *shrug*
Reading it made me realise how very long it's been since i've corresponded with anyone via post whatsoever. My friends in Europe and i switched to email years ago, after 15 years of letter-writing in 2 of those cases.
I have more images of the queen of England and the King of Spain than i ever imagined i would. The British stamps are kinda neat. Sonia, a friend in Spain, and i at one point sent each other letters with matching stamps, if one set denominated in US cents and the other in pesetas. Correos de España and the USPS in the 80s issued identical 4-set of light blue stamps with lace printed on them. They were quite lovely.
The queen of England stamps came courtesy of my friend Claire. She's the daughter of my friend's mother's friend. I contacted her in middle school as part of a research project i was doing. Her sister and a friend of hers stayed in my apartment in Boston one weekend while my partner at the time and i were in Maine, a bit to the confusion of our neighbours.
We lived in a triple-decker similar to the one at the top of that page in the link, and we all shared a washing machine and clotheslines in the basement. We forgot to tell the people upstairs and downstairs that friends would be there while we were out of town. We told the visitors they could use the laundry, so the neighbours came down to find bras and panties and other girl clothes - everyone in the building was male at that point. Heh. We explained when we got back. That was a great place to live in. I still miss that apartment and that building, if not the city.
I met Sonia at a bar in Madrid in 1984; drinking laws in Spain are rather not at all like those in most of North Ameriaca. I last saw Sonia in New York City in 1993. My mom and i were up there for pride week, and Sonia happened to be in town with a friend. We all had lunch together, though Mom was not able to participate in the conversation much, as we mostly spoke in Spanish. I've yet to meet Claire, though i know where she lives and where sho works, so i am able to do so when i get to England.
All these years later, i clearly remember both their addresses of 20 years ago, including the oddity that Sonia's town in Spain had the same postcode as Manassas, VA at the time - 22110. One of my letters to her got returned once because of that. I learned to write SPAIN very prominently on the envelopes because of that.

May. 10th, 2007 04:40 pmI just made egg salad, and am toasting some bread to go with it. Smelling it brings me back to the lazy Sunday mornings of my childhood, mostly because it's Safeway store brand bread in the toaster, which was the bread we most always had on hand growing up. It's always amazing hov evocative smells are.
Submarines and Snow
Apr. 16th, 2007 04:44 pm( In the town where i was born, lived a man who... )
We all live in a yellow submarine,
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine.
182, 273, 282, 455, 281, 353, 586 & 1066: those were the numbers of my yellow submarines. I never, in 13 years of K-12 school, had to walk to school. I was always bused. My HS class chose Yellow Submarine as our class song, as most of us spent at least an hour riding to school.
Virgnia "Ginny" Mondgrain drove me to school for most of those 13 years. Her grandson Jimmy would be with us sometimes in the afternoons coming home from HS. ( Invariably... )
So we got back on the bus at 11:30. I got home that night at 19:00. So 7ish hours getting home that day. If i recall, neary half of all students in Fairfax County and Fairfax City did not get home that night. And Bob Spillane learned that here in DC, we do not do Winter like up in Boston.

The Weekend
Apr. 9th, 2007 12:28 pmFriday, i rode with
nosebeepbear and Marc up to
dhs's housecooling. We arrived Friday, and
persis cooked for us, the aforementioned, plus
whc,
dmk and
aliza250, a very nice dinner, as well as some lovely oatmeal on Saturday morning.
Saturday, in addition to the people above, i got to see
nancylebov,
netpositive - whom it was a pleasure to meet,
scarlettj9,
suecochran,
stevenjoel,
museinred,
lionessprite, T, who is the sister of
selki, and a bunch of other cool people.
We headed back to DC on Sunday morning.
dhs made eggs for all of us who had crashed. :) After we ate,
nosebeepbear drove us to my church, where i had to be not later than 11 AM, as i'm teaching the Middle Schoolers this term. I'm really proud of her, while riding with her this weekend, we crossed a railroad track, the Francis Scott Key Memorial Bridge, and a small drawspan which appeared just as she was calming down from crossing the Key Bridge. Go
nosebeepbear!
In summation, i had a rockin' weekend. :D

Job Search and Life Update
Apr. 2nd, 2007 10:40 pmI had a very wonderful last couple of days. Let's go backwards, shall we:
Cold mostly gone, as is the swelling in the throat - the steroids and rest and the humidifier and much water did their jobs. Um. I think that's all for now.
- Monday 2 Apr: Part 1 of interview for a job supporting ACE for CBP. Part 2 will be in Spanish, via telephone on Wednesday. Plus: it pays well, and comes with a Secret clearance. Minus: It's night shift, 19-7 or 21-9.
- Sunday 1 Apr: Got home at 5, slept through church, oops, i was supposed to be there for the middle-schoolers, slept through a gaming session i'd RSVP'd yes to, and slept some more.
- Saturday 31 March: I got to go to dinner at Lonestar with
nosebeepbear,
supremeherptile, and
not_the_pope, i make a nice meal of sides there, and then i helped
not_the_pope sink a bowling alley. My years of helpdesk experience actually aided nicely in figuring out how to do that. Later,
scruffycritter joined us. Much fun was had by all. Somewhere in there,
nosebeepbear and
not_the_pope and i went to Giant for Chocolate, thanks to
palmwiz.
- Friday 30 March: Gaming
chez_turtle YAY!
- Thursday 29 March: Went to the
nookery and visited and cooked with Marc, and got to spend time with the other Nookizens, too. (If you're not in the know, The Nookery is a house, inhabited by the 4 Nookizens, comprising 2 Nookerinas and 2 Nookerites; it's a very, very happy place.)

Mar. 25th, 2007 01:48 amEight hours in jazz shoes is hard on the feet. Today, we had a 15:00 and a 19:30 performance. House at the matinee was dead, but had expressive faces that showed they were into it. Evening house rocked! Last show tomorrow at 15:00 at UU Church of Arlington, VA at 4444 George Mason Dr (at Rt 50, SE corner) in Arlington. If you are able to come, do. I can comp you tix if needed.
I had a lovely time during my brief visit chez Turtle this evening. Bun-bun, a boy rabbit, recently of
chez_turtle has made it here home with me and
benhill. Jasper, the elder cat who spent his first eighteen months with a rabbit, sniffed and ignored him. Feldspar, the younger cat, thinks he'd be fun to play with, and is still trying to figure him out.
I put him on the coffee table so he's dog-eye level. Duke, the dog, with Ben restraining him, was brought near enough to sniff. They sniffed and sniffed at each other. Then Bun-bun thumped, and went to the side of the cage i put a blanket over, to provide him 'safe shelter', and hissed at the dog. So rabbit and dog will take some acclimating.

What a Wonderful Day!
Mar. 21st, 2007 10:01 pmToday, i:
- Had lunch at Buca's in Gaithersburg with
nosebeepbear
- Went to my mother's house and spent some time with the dog and two cats, and let the dog out to do her business, all while chatting with
nancylebov
- Then went to my sister's, where we celebrated the 1st birthday, two days late, of Gavin, my younger nephew
- On the way home, got a call from my sister informing me that our grandad, our father's father, is getting married on 28 April to Bea, his companion since Marie, his 2nd wife, died a few months after my father did.
Updatey Thing
Feb. 25th, 2007 04:08 amI got home about 30 minutes ago. Just as i stopped at the light at the end of the off-ramp from the toll road, clicking noises upon the windscreen. Sleet. Enough to have accumulated to the point of seeing wheel tracks and footprints by the time i went into the house. I'm hoping Reston's far enough west to avoid the freezing rain - we'll see. I'm guessing no church in the morning.
( Why i was getting home at 04:00 )
On Thursday, i injured myself playing Wii Sports - i hurt my right shoulder and my left gluteus maximus. I got sports injuries from playing console games. Who'da thunk?
As a result of those injuries, and rehearsal Friday night, i hurt too much to go up the stairs, then slept - sort of - on the sofa. This morning, i ate a small bit, ached a lot, managed to get up the stairs, fall into bed, and slept through today's rehearsal.
I did get some ibuprofen after dinner tonight, which has helped a lot. I expect to be at tomorrow's rehearsal, assuming i'm healed enough for the dance numbers. :| No Wii for me until i'm better, and more carefully, obviously.

Had a lovely game of Killer Bunnies Chez Turtle this evening. Dinner at Amphora in Vienna afterward with
grlsctgnbad,
savant_da_rat,
kody_wolf, and E, whose lj handle i did not get, if one exists. I should sleep soon. We'll see.

Mardi Gras!
Feb. 20th, 2007 12:35 amIt's Mardi Gras! I'm heading down to Clarendon Mardi Gras again this year. Who wants to go with, and maybe dine before or after?
Jasper,
my elder cat, showed up a few minutes ago. Not sure if he was upstairs or downstairs - i'm on the middle floor. He came at me from the right, and i found his head wet, mostly on his right side, on the top, over the ear, and a bit down the side. His right ear was very cold, much like human skin when one is a bit numb from the cold. He's dry now, and the ear almost back to normal. Very strange.
A Wonderful Weekend!
Dec. 17th, 2006 12:01 pmI had a fantabulous time at Long Night - it was wonderful getting to know people whom i already know in an intimate, open, loving, and sacred environment. Thank you.
And for those of you who have not experienced it, Accidental Butterscotch [Pudding] Fudge(tm) is most very delicious
The rest of today, i will read, maybe watch a movie, nap, and do laundry, in some order or another.

Thanksgiving Weekend 2006
Nov. 28th, 2006 03:59 pmThanksgiving Day, i had a lovely meal with
agentxs at Hunan Manor in Columbia. The food was delicious, and the company exquisite. From there, i headed up to the hotel for Darkover, where i happened to meet up with
nosebeepbear and
supremeherptile for a meal. Went to bed early so that on Friday, i could pick up
nancylebov and bring her down to the con, which went well. I've worked with
nancylebov at many cons for a couple of years now, this one went easier than most in terms of unloading at the con and packing up after the con; not quite sure why that was.
I spent the weekend at Darkover: hanging with people, dining, swimming, meeting a few new people. Saturday i played several hands of Mah Jongg with
nosebeepbear, and two men whose name's i'm not recalling at the moment. I sang the Hallelujah Chorus with lots of others around the pool, and then joined others Christmas carolling in the main program room. And despite my speaking voice, i sing bass, and some bari, for those who've not heard me sing. After the carolling, one of the other carollers had me listen to John Denver song, and then i went back into the hotel to recruit some people to go to the diner. Ended up going there with
hawkwind2000 and Charles Butler, and we were joined promptly by
nosebeepbear and
cptsevern. Nothing like a good meal at 02:00.
Awoke Sunday at 10:30 after not nearly enough sleep, checked out and tossed my things in the car. Then i plopped into a chair outside the pool and endeavoured to nap, but got interrupted by a couple people asking if i were okay. It's nice to know that people care, even though it disturbed my nap. Had brunch with
nosebeepbear,
scruffycritter,
not_the_pope,
ottour, and
ladysmith and her hubby and child. (And now i know who
ladysmith is - one less mystery in my life.) After the dealer's room closed, i packed
nancylebov's business into my car and took her home, after pausing for Indian, where we ran into and joined Rik Fire and his wife, and Lady Amber Dawn and her friend D. Got to Charles Butler's place a bit before midnight, then we went chez moi, that i could drop him at IAD for his trip to Brazil.
Monday, i slept most of the day. Today, i'm back at work.

A Long, Mixed, Night
Nov. 15th, 2006 01:37 amI went to dance class tonight. I've really enjoyed getting to know
leiacat,
sincityopera, and
selki better. After class was dinner at Ambrosia in Montrose Crossing shopping center in Rockville with
leiacat and
selki; selki kindly paid, as coincidentally, leiacat and i both left our wallets home today. Conveniently, i had enough cash on hand to pay for the ferry to get there in the first place.
( Ferry? What ferry? )
During class and dinner, i left my phone in the car.
nancylebov rang and left a message - i'll ring her back tomorrow, and my roommate,
benhill rang three times, which is the reason i checked my vmail while heading down the 270 Spur toward home.
( And i go into DC because it seems that my roommate's car has been stolen )

Cette Noir, je t'écris
Nov. 10th, 2006 11:40 pmmais je ne t'écris pas une poésie ce soir, au lieu de cela, je t'écris ceci:
(Tu ne sus pas que je pourrais écrire dans le français, eh?)
Well, enough of that. At least i know i've not forgotten it all, even if it's really rusty. I should revisit L'étrange or Le Petit Prince for a basic refresher. Tomorrow, or more likely today when you may actually see this, is Armistice Day, known here in The States as Veterans Day. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, Germany signed an armistice on the Western Front, ending the war with France, Britain, Belgium, Holland, Spain, the US, Canada, and The Commonwealth.
( My great-grandfather fought in that war for Germany, for which he won an Iron Cross. (cut for length) )
The memory of Uncle Fred weighs on me a little bit each Armistice Day; i wish it was still easy to buy poppies like it used to be. This year, with the current administration and the battles over whether people like me are people who deserve full rights or not, his memory and his stories haunt me more than usual this year.
So this year, i fondly, yet a bit melancholically, raise a glass in memory of my great-grandparents Schoenmann.

I've had a chronic sinus/upper resp thing for some months now. It's flared up again this past week, as has a bizarre rash in my right armpit which also appeared last month at full moon. :| I've an appointment with an LPN on Wednesday for a blood draw, and will discuss both these with her then.
Saturday, i slept almost all day, which health-wise was a very good thing, but sadly therefore missed helping a friend pack and get things into storage, and missed gaming at
badmagic's place. :( Saturday evening, at 18:30, i did put in an appearence, with 6 lovely wines, at a church dinner that i'd forgotten i'd signed up for until i got a phone call about it. That evening, i briefly stopped by the
nookery and visited with the Nookizens,
dmk and her hubby who were visiting from North Carolina. I went to bed early.
Today, i got to church on time, which was good, as today we had an ethnic Bengali Muslim from India visit our class, and who spoke to us about Islam from her experiences. She's also a school teacher whom some of the kids have had, which made for a pleasantly relaxed time. After that, i had a lovely time visting chez
mergyeugnau, where i became re-acquainted with
ruth_wielgosz, a very wonderful person whom i am thrilled to have run into again. I also made the acquaintance of
karma_soupra there; he is most interesting, and i hope i get the chance to know him a bit better. I'm home now, and have been for a bit.
I'm fading VERY fast, and so hope this post is coherent. And somehow, despite my social interactions this weekend, i'm feeling empty, and totally emotionally drained. Here's hoping a good night's sleep rectifies that some.

Dada, Compliments of Real Life
Oct. 17th, 2006 09:59 amMy friend Lorelei and i periodically help her mother, The Mama, with things around the house and/or yardwork. One day, a few years back, we were doing yardwork. We'd finished up and went into the house for some tea.
Our water had just come to a boil when The Mama came into the kitchen and told us she had one more thing she wanted us to do; she'd found a dead bird a few weeks prior, and it was in the freezer.
Being accustomed to random things in general, and especially from The Mama, we waited. The Mama opened the freezer, reached in and produced a freezer bag, in which was a thoroughtly frozen bird, of which type i do not recall.
We sipped our tea, waiting. The Mama then asked us to give it a proper burial. So i took the bagged, frozen, bird, and we finished our tea. Then Lorelei and i went outside, and discussed what to do, and *why* does The Mama always have to pull things like this on us, whatever.
We grabbed some tools, and pried up a couple bricks at the edge of the grape arbour, dug under them, deposited the bird, sans bag, covered it with some soil, and replaced the bricks. We realized then that The Mama was watching tearfully from the kitchen window, so we stood there solmenly while i rectited a Salve Regina in Latin, then we remained standing there until The Mama disappeared from the window.

Oct. 13th, 2006 09:09 pmThis post is inspired by a reply to a comment i made in this thought-provoking post in
fallenpegasus' LJ, in which he said:
( An auto-biographical vignette, which gives some pertinent personal background - in short, my view of middle-class is skewed. )
In summary, will there ever be full social equality? Very probably not. Can there be less social inequality? Most probably, if not in the near-term.
fallenpegasus is absolutely correct that people are *diferent*. We don't all want, desire, or even need, the same things. But hould we each have a truly equal opportunity to have the same? Yes, we should.
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
But people are not socially "equal" and cannot be, because people are *different*.He's absolutely right, and i do not in the least disagree with his statement. But does that mean that we should not acknowledge those who are too different from us; that we oughtn't treat those lower than ourselves socio-ecomically as they are people; that we should refuse to try to dilute the concentration of below-poverty-line people in the ghettos we as a society have, in most places, forced the poor to live, or that we should not at least try improve the conditions therein?

Observations, Reminisces, and Stati
Sep. 27th, 2006 09:38 pmI left work tonight in twilight at half past 19, GMT-4. The days, they wane, as they are wont to do at this point in the year. Despite this, my nose tells me that it's not Summer, not Fall. There hints of leaf mould in the air, whilst at the same time, my nose finds still the flowers of late Summer. My ears right now hear cicadas and crickets; again, Summer and Fall.
( About the trees, including the mangos and the lychees )
This year, i visited my father's grave not on his birthday, nor his deathday, nor his burial day. On each day, i had another social thing to do, and i went to each and enjoyed myself very much.
nadyalec's father died some years later on the the day mine was buried. I was fortunate to be able to have spent some time with Ghassan at his deathbed. I'm glad i did it; it was cathartic, if a bit trying. But then, what is joy without sorrow. I'm also glad to have been there for
nadyalec, as sie was for me when my own father was ill. I remember both Thomas (my father) and Ghassan fondly, and i miss both dearly. Despite that, i find i've moved on enough to live well, but have very much not forgotten.
( A little bit about my grandfathers )
Samhain approaches. It's my favourite holiday of the year, followed closely by Long Night/Yule. I'll be helping to lead the annual Samhain Service in memory of at my church again this year. I'm looking forward to that, and hope some of you will join us for that service if you're in, or find yourself in, the DC area Sunday 29 Oct. Child care and Sunday School are available for your children, if you have any.

And thus has been my life this month. Oh, almost forgot. I had dinner with
muzikmaker and
agentxs at Yuan Fu Vegetarian in Rockville on Monday the 18th, at which i get my violin back. I need to get 2 new mutes and a new dampit. I really like the new bridge. It's cut a bit differintly than the one it replaced, but in a good way. And the rehaired bow plays so much better than it did before. Who knew that rehairing would make such a huge differnce. I still want to get a new bow, as i'm not fond of the lightness, nor the balance point of this one, but it's quit usable now. Thank you

Aug. 14th, 2006 05:31 pmOddly, i'm finding that my various social circles overlap very significantly moreso than i ever imagagined, at least based on the sampling here in LJland.
Also, i've been nagged to start tracking my food, sleep, and mood. I've decided this would behoove me on multiple levels. If you want in on that filter, please to comment or contact me.

Here I Go Again
Jul. 31st, 2006 10:57 pmYet another evening that i feel a need write. I remember when that meant picking up a pen and using paper. Of course, i've found barely any of my pens, though i have found some of the paper. Nice absorbent paper, that really takes the ink. My blotter has been found and unpacked, and is back at its usual roost on a bookshelf. It might fun a day to try western script using my Chinese inks, brushes, and paper.
Tonight, i wanted more than anything to talk to someone; not sure why or about what. So, in the abscence of direct human interaction, tonight, i reach out via electrons and introduce you to CRK. He's not on LJ. His name is Chris, but i've always filed him under his initials in my head, heart, and files.
( CRK's tale of woe. There's a light at the end of the tunnel, but he can't see it yet )
Anyway, i tried calling him tonight. He didn't answer. I hope this means he was asleep, and not just too depressed to bother to talk.
After leaving a short, hey, how ya doin' message for him, i read several more chapters in the book i'd started after dinner. But i still wanted to talk, though i'm not sure about what. So, i thought about calling Fred.
You do remember Fred, don't you? He was separated from his wife, and was released from a mental ward after 3 days confinement, and showed up at my door. I took him in for a year, and kvetched quite a bit in that time. Happily, our relationship endured, as did mine and
nadyalec's after our episode of sharing housing. I ended up not dialing him, as he's in school, and very busy, and by then it was twenty of twenty-three. I miss him. Our relationship is rather mystical, yet grounded. We share a strong connection on a deep level. There are very few other humans to whom i feel that connected. I'll not enumerate others here and now; somehow, that would be rude, at least from my point of view.
Um, i think i'm done blathering for now.

BTW, Did I Mention
Jul. 12th, 2006 01:33 pmthat Whole Foods Market Arlington has asked me to come back. They fired my former supervisor for all the reasons i rebelled against her, and the store leadership has changed. Nice of them to think of me. It's the first time i've been contacted by a former employer to ask me to return.
I doubt i'll go back, as the pay sucks compared to what i do now, but it's nice to have options.

Summer 1986
Jul. 11th, 2006 10:50 pm( Here's what came out of my fingers tonight )
And thus was my last summer of innocence. I knew i had an essay itching to get out today. Had no idea this would be the topic. Though it's been on my mind of late. I even pointedly went to, and much enjoyed, a cookout at
leiacat and
bfudlmint's place on his birthday this year, rather than my usual picnic at the graveyard.

The 1st and 4th of July are two of my favourite holidays of the year: Canada Day and Independence Day respectively. They were the 2 holidays a year that we always observed as a family, and Dad was around for, not having to work.
( Here i reminisce about a Canada Day of yore )
Today, i had a total blast. I hung with loreleisays and her hubby, and our mutual friend Elizabeth (who has invited me to her new place in Messina Province in Sicily :D ). We hit the Nats v Marlins game, in which Ryan Zimmerman hit a walk-off 3-run homer in the bottom of the 9th, on 2 strikes, 2 outs. I'm SO glad we stayed till the end.
After the game, back into the Metro to Rosslyn, where the food was waiting in a cooler in my car. Loreleisays' hubby and i went to the car to get the food. As we were crossing the Skywalk bridge over Forty Myer Dr, we saw a flash of lighting, and simultaneously, heard a deafening clap of thunder. We scurried across the bridge, and took shelter at the church entrance, before deciding to get the stuff before the weather got worse.( Ha! )
What a wonderful day. :D

Saturday i left the house early, arriving at 1000 in Springfield to help The Mama* get her new kitchen in order. I got the joyous task of papering the drawers and shelves. Talk about f'n tedious. After that, a 7mi hike through the hills along the river. Got home at 1930 to find my keys in the house, and
benhill not home. Read on the front porch in the rain for a bit, then called
agentxs and had a lovely dinner at Yuan Fu Vegetarian in Rockville. Got home at 2300 for the evening.
Sunday, slept late, fed the cats, read the paper, dressed, and went to a lovely cookout at
leiacat and
bfudlmint's place.
lonebear,
heptadecagram,
muzikmaker21,
madbodger
red_lynx, and others i'm too tired to recall by lj handle at the moment, were there too. Much fun was had by all. At the end of the evening,
lonebear and i were trying to wait out the torrential storm. We finally gave up waiting it out at about 2045. I then drove at 25-35mph down I-95 and I-495 to VA 267 back home Reston, VA. Then found a fallen tree on Glade Dr, requiring me to turn around, back up Glade to Soapstone to South Lakes to Colts Neck and back to Glade to home. Bleah. Considering the severity of the storms and the amount of rain, really, no complaints.
The top of my throat is sore too,and it's a bit hard to talk. I should get some lozenges and maybe some chloroseptic. Well, off to bed now, at all too late, early, whatever, an hour.

Into the Woods
Jun. 23rd, 2006 11:09 pmI took Duke (
benhill's dog) for a walk just a bit ago. I let him lead the first bit. We wandered along the edge of the woods behind our street, cut across the bottom bit, and down the trail into the woods. I made him turn right, for the shorter walk. At one point there were so many lightnin' bugs that the trees looked like the were strung with blinking Yule lights. We ended up taking the next-to-longest possible walk available from a right turn. Very enjoyable, and the lightnin' bugs were just amazing.
And then, for something completely different, check out the new video on YouTube from
thereisnofear. It's NSFW, but it is mighty entertaining.

Saturday, i slept a bit later than usual, despite protest on the part of the cats, then went over to the
nookery, ( and gleefully dealt with a bunch of trash and recycling )
It was wonderful getting to spend a bunch of time with
nosebeepbear, and we got a lot of useful things done around the house, too.
Sunday, which it still is right now, i got up, started to go to church, realized i forgot the smudge stick, went home, got the smudge stick (of sage and piñón), went to church, and helped lead a very successful Summer Solstice Service, ( and had a lovely afternoon )
Then i came home, fed the cats, who are right now on the couch beside me, sleeping on
benhill's blue fleece, read the Post, did some laundry, did the dishes, cooked dinner, then surfed some.
A most wonderful weekend all-in-all. Low key, great company, and fun activities. Little more can be asked of a weekend.

Pride Week & Work
Jun. 7th, 2006 04:55 pmLast night's Pride Week Interfaith Service went fabulously. The whole thing ran only 1h35, the MCC Combined Choir (Gospel + Standard Choirs) was fabulous, Katrina Messenger's message on the Four Archetypes of Spiritual Vocation was inspiring and on-target. If you go to read it, she has it posted to click through at points where she paused during her speech. Rev. Abena McCray of Unity Fellowship Church gave a rowsing, and entertaining Appeal, we'll see how deeply pepole dug shortly. The most surprising participant to me was the Right Reverend Father Rusty S. Smith, CSB of the Evangelical Anglican Church. (That title is Bishop for those unfamiliar with Anglican nomenclature.)
As for the work bit, in a daily team meeting the other day, my supervisor stated that he found my tevas, which i was wearing with jeans, inappropriate footwear. I challenged that on the basis that he did not find my female teammate's open-toed footwear offensive. Well, today he gathered us together and read us the Dress Code. With occassional exception, it turns out we may not only wear open-toed shoes, but also knee-lenght shorts. Heh.

Clue-by-fours are Tedious at Times
Jun. 2nd, 2006 12:57 amI've had a few readings in the last week. The first three, all of their own accord, with me providing no data to the reader, other than choosing a deck, focused on work. Things will go well there, if not in the way i expect, is the consensus.
The last one focused on potential relationship and basically said, get ye in order, all around, and all will fall into place.
G'night.

Mi Historia Musical
May. 22nd, 2006 11:39 pmIt was August of 1980. I turned to my parents and said, "I want to learn to play the piano." They looked at each other, at me, and each other again. My mother asked whether i was sure. I was. "We'll talk about this later," they told me. What they didn't ask me was why. I was very dissappointed that i couldn't see the keys as i was playing. I wanted to learn in the first place so i could make the same neat visual patterns on the instrument that the music teacher made.
( Cut for length 1 )When school started again in July of 1981, we were offered the chance to learn a stringed instrument. I went home and told them i wanted to learn violin. They looked at each other, ( ...Cut for teaser, and for length 2 ) I even got to have fun playing it out of tune sometimes.
So, 27 years after i started playing musical instruments, and 20 years after my last public performance on a violin, i present the first-ever photos of me actually playing one. Both were taken by Penny Martin, who was also in The Two Gentlemen of Verona. She's a fascinating person, and a violist i'm trying to convince to participate in a quartet. Anyway, tada!
( Cut for safe-for-work pix )
I have really good form!
muzikmaker21 had commented on it, but i had no meaningful idea. The photos provide a view of me playing that a mirror does not. I made the top photo into an icon, as debuted on this post. And, yes, my eyes are closed in it. Closing my eyes allows me to a) really listen to what i'm playing and b) be really aware of where my left hand is physically on the instrument, and what my right hand is doing with the bow.

My, My Weekend is Full!
May. 17th, 2006 12:17 pmSaturday:
- Maryland Faerie Festival in the morning through mid-afternoon
- Pick up
maddogairpirate from Union Station at ~16
- Eat
- Get to 2GV (Closing night, haleluia!)
- Make at least a token appearance at the joint cast party afterward.
- Hang with
maddogairpirate for a while
- Hook up with
quentinor, with whom
maddogairpirate will be spending a few days.
- Buy some picknicky, easy-to-eat food
- Meet up with the Dutkys so we can get to Nissan Pavillion to see Depeche Mode (I'm totally looking forward to this because my friend hanklider in Amsterdam raved about the show when he saw it in late April.)
I read
ozarque's journal regularly. For those of you not familiar, it's the journal of Suzette Haden Elgin. Today, she posted this, and i followed the link in the post and read what was there.
What said link leads to is a single-page PDF entitled
( and here's what follows ) Seeing that paper leaves me conflicted about what to do, and unsure about what to do if i do decide to pursue the linguistics thing.
So what advice do you have for me? I'll gladly answer whatever questions you may have about this also, as i'm sure i'm leaving out information you may want. Thanks in advance for your input.
(And for what it's worth, LJ's spell checker knows not the words Phonosemantic nor Assonances, though i suppose those are jargon enough that it needn't know them. But neither does it know the plural form of analysis. Hmph.)

Phonosemantic Coherence in English Assonances. It's worth looking at it, even though i think most of you will find it boringish, if interesting, for looking at it will give you some context for what follows.
