This past weekend was wonderful. Went off to my annual Columbus Day/Thanksgiving Day weekend (Depending on your country) to the Sooper Seekrit October Gathering. A glorious weekend of friends, spirituality, community, fun, support, adventure and more. Arrived early, helped with sign-in. Presided at the newcomers' breakfast, for new attendees and their sponsors. Played lots of board games with the youngin's and Cards Against Humanity with the Adults. A canoe trip to rescue a totem who fell from the Wiggly Bridge. A glorious evening with friends in the sauna. Lovely time around the fire -- tending, singing, dancing, meditating. Lovely food, as always. Some nice Tennessee whiskey. A good session on Aging and Dying -- caring for oneself while caring for one's elders.

This morning, on my way home from work - i got in the car at 07:10 local time - i happened to hit the button for DC101, and lo and behold, it was then 07:15, and just as the receiver got there what happened, but Arlo Guthrie's Alice's Restaurant erupted from the speakers. So, i spent most of my drive home knowing that verily and truly, it be Thanksgiving. Never mind that i was heading home at 07:00, and that i work tonight at 19:00.

Tomorrow after work i head to Darkover, where a dinner will be had in the glorious presence of Saint Ow, canonized a year ago by the Pope herself, whom i hope will allow me to grace her presence for some part of the weekend.

On my flist today are a wide variety of things, ranging from a family gathering at the deathbed, to a year of photographs at milepost 38 of the Washington & Old Dominion trail montaged into a video, to cheer about healthy cats, frustration and exasperation at Life, and musings about authors dealing with negative reviews, kindly linked through the opening of the To be or not to be soliloquy.

I believe we here in the DC-Baltimore area be in store for a Winter like we've not seen in some years. It was ~76ºF at around Noon, right now it's ~66ºF, and it will be ~36ºF by midnight. I need to bake/cook something for to eat at work tonight, as i doubt much will be open tonight.

From the for-now open door here in the living room, i hear a wind such that the trees are dancing that beautiful rhythmic ballet they do so enjoy when there be a stiff breeze. I have heard cats caterwauling children making joyful noises, birds chirping, the odd airplane, and the pitter-patter of the cats playing. I am watching the wind strip most of the last of the frivolously fluttering and twitching yellow leaves from the trees. I imagine i'll see the oranges and reds mostly gone on my way to work, insofar as there will yet be light at that hour. I need must give credit to the Southern Red Oaks for tenaciously clinging to their browned leaves, that the snow, ice, and new growth of the Spring send the leaves to fertilize the ground and become new Dirt.

And so, the trees stand naked, Winter looms, Darkness is well into her reign, which shall last into Spring, and we all continue the Danse Macabre that be Life, as we struggle through the Dead of the year, anticipating the promise of the quickening that bring rebirth in the form of Easter, with her chickens and eggs and rabbits and fecundity. A virtual red candle to the memory of Ostara, that we all come through the Winter well. Blessings hundredfold unto us all!

The first two drafts of this poem are linked here, in this post. I want to incorporate some aspects of [livejournal.com profile] chaosdancer's comments on Draft 0, though i may save her input as the core for the Yule poem. Oh, i've decided to do a cycle of 8 for the major Wiccan Shabbats, plus probably 2, one for New Moon, and one for Full Moon, and probably Harvest Moon, and Blood Moon, and i'm forgetting a moon to round out the cycle to 13. Thirteens have been very good to me in this life, it's my favourite number. All the jobs that have gone best for me i either interviewed, or started work, on the 13th.

Anyway, back to the poem. I've lopped off the ending from Draft 1, unless others of you think it should stay, though who knows, it may reappear. The n-dashes will become m-dashes, and i'm debating counting a fulls stop mid-line as a syllable. I'll try reading it aloud again before committing to that. I've tightened it up rhythmically a lot this draft.

I think i'll end up keeping the random-length stanzas, as these will be mini-epic in format, i think; ooooh, maybe a single epic in 13 parts... . I standardized the first line of the stanzas this draft, too; thank you [livejournal.com profile] nancylebov for that suggestion. As Summer Ends is the working title, though it may end up just being Samhain, or if choosing the epic format, The Wheel of the Year.

Part of me might rather do a cycle to the Native American cycle, as that's my tradition, though i think it need be a separate project. Anyhow, off to draft 2 the poem )

And feedback, as always, is most welcome.

I was surprised and pleased to find this on the front page of the UUA website:

"Tzedakah va Chessed"
A Prayer for the High Holy Days
by Elizabeth Lerner, the Jew-U minister of my UU Church.

I left work tonight in twilight at half past 19, GMT-4. The days, they wane, as they are wont to do at this point in the year. Despite this, my nose tells me that it's not Summer, not Fall. There hints of leaf mould in the air, whilst at the same time, my nose finds still the flowers of late Summer. My ears right now hear cicadas and crickets; again, Summer and Fall.

About the trees, including the mangos and the lychees )

This year, i visited my father's grave not on his birthday, nor his deathday, nor his burial day. On each day, i had another social thing to do, and i went to each and enjoyed myself very much. [livejournal.com profile] nadyalec's father died some years later on the the day mine was buried. I was fortunate to be able to have spent some time with Ghassan at his deathbed. I'm glad i did it; it was cathartic, if a bit trying. But then, what is joy without sorrow. I'm also glad to have been there for [livejournal.com profile] nadyalec, as sie was for me when my own father was ill. I remember both Thomas (my father) and Ghassan fondly, and i miss both dearly. Despite that, i find i've moved on enough to live well, but have very much not forgotten.

A little bit about my grandfathers )

Samhain approaches. It's my favourite holiday of the year, followed closely by Long Night/Yule. I'll be helping to lead the annual Samhain Service in memory of at my church again this year. I'm looking forward to that, and hope some of you will join us for that service if you're in, or find yourself in, the DC area Sunday 29 Oct. Child care and Sunday School are available for your children, if you have any.

Thanks to all who showed up for the Summer Solstice Service today. It went well i think. I'm curious to here your thoughts/impressions. I didn't have as much vested personally in this as I did (do) Samhain, so i'm not sure how it went. The Spiral Dance was fun though. :)

Just a friendly reminder that the Summer Solstice Service at UUCSS is this Sunday at 10:30 AM. Free childcare (2 and under, diapers are cool) or Sunday School (3 and up) are available for children and youth who are not nursing. 10:15-11:45 are the times for childcare/sunday school.

I know that [livejournal.com profile] chelona and [livejournal.com profile] voltbang and their daughter are coming, as are [livejournal.com profile] darrenzieger and [livejournal.com profile] annezieger and their children, and i've got a pretty strong probably from [livejournal.com profile] nosebeepbear. Fred will be there too, if you're curious to meet him.

There will be a guided meditation, a spiral dance, a surprise sing-along musical ending, and more! So come on out and have a grand 'old' time. :D

Is this Tuesday, the 22nd, at 02:54 AM GMT-4.

This coming Sunday, 26 June, i'm helping lead a Summer Solstice Service/Ritual at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Silver Spring. It's 3 blocks north of the DC Beltway on New Hampshire Avenue, on the right.

Easy access from MD 193, MD 410, US 29, Cherry Hill Road, Powder Mill Road, and Randolph Road if you're highway adverse. A mere 2.5 block walk from the end of the RideOn route 20(or get off at the first stop after the beltway and avoid crossing NH), or 1.5 blocks from the 1st Metrobus stop after Powder Mill Road, Metrobus route K6 or C8.

It starts at 10:30 (yes, in the morning). Come on by if you can. Spiral dancing and surprise musical ending, all for just showing up!

I'm in Reston, so if you're in Western NoVA and want to come, i have room for 3 adults in my car, as i think Fred is going to attend. [livejournal.com profile] papertigers, if you want to come, i'd be happy to retrieve you from, and return you to, the vicinity of your abode. And if [livejournal.com profile] nosebeepbear were to be up to coming, that would be swell, too.

Oh, and if you have kids... )

Well, no surprises here: )
I *always* come up Buddhist on these types of quizzes. Though Buddhism is a bit dogmatic for my tastes. I'm more Native American in my spirituality, as evidenced here: )

This fits my self-identity much better.
