Today's the concert
Jun. 7th, 2009 09:10 amMr Trowbridge's Retirement Concert is today at 3 at Gar-Field Senior High School, which is the large, odd-shaped building across from Potomac Mills in that aerial view. Maybe see a couple of you there.
Psyched! Music run-throuh
May. 5th, 2009 11:04 pmI just completed my first bowed run-through of the music for Mr Trowbridge's Retirement Concert. I am SO looking forward to that concert! :D
Well, i'm not alone, nor listless, there's no breakfast table, the room's far from empty, there's no young girl, but violins, and if my journal is not the center of my own attention, only the Heavens know what is.
I came across this thread, which has proven to be most interesting - lots of useful commentary on strings, rosin, and string cleaners - because the other day, i restrung my instrument, and found i lacked a new E string, and that the new D was Aluminium-wrapped rather than Sterling-wrapped. I'll try out the new-but-E-String instrument tomorrow. I've ordered an Obligato Gold-stahl E, which sounds absolutely fabulous on my instrument.
I've been using a full Obligato set, Silber-Silber-Aluminium-Gold-stahl, for a while now. This set, once the E arrives, will be Obligato Silber-Aluminium-Aluminium-Gold-stahl. My last stringing had Stahl E instead, and had a tinny sound, rather than the clean brightness of the Gold-stahl C.
I'm thinking on trying Evah Pirazzi strings next, because even with the mixed reviews, and people complaining they wear out in 8-9 months, since i usually only get 6 months from strings anyway, and i'd like to see how they work with my instrument. If i like them, i may stick with the Obligato E anyway, since it sounds so nice on mine.
Any of you have opinions on the gold-flecked rosin mentioned early in the thread linked above? Also, think you that i should try Violino strings?
I've used German, and specifically Pirastro or Thomastik-Infeld, strings the whole time i've been playing. Quelle surprise. I've been debating going back to Olives, too, though i think that may make my instrument sound dark. Hm.
(I've decided this post, at root, is
muzikmaker21's fault, as he's the reason i really started playing again, and rereading this, i've obviously picked up right where i'd left off at 19.)

Anything Goes!
Jan. 17th, 2007 10:20 pmTonight, we had our first dance rehearsal for Blow, Gabriel, Blow. I really must learn the music soon that i can dance and sing easily. Hard part of that is that i'm the only bass, and so the only one on my part.
The music director and dance director both rock. No opinion yet on producer/director, bet we start blocking next month, so i'm sure i'll have opinions ere long.

When i was just a little child,
i asked my mother, "What will we eat?"
Will it be savory, or possibly sweet?
Here's what she said to me:
( Que sera-serole... )
A-yup, i finally did it.

I've posted no real content since the 1st. ( Highlights, and I am so tired of being ill. Horizontal lines set off the main non-church, non-illness thing. )
And thus has been my life this month. Oh, almost forgot. I had dinner with
muzikmaker and
agentxs at Yuan Fu Vegetarian in Rockville on Monday the 18th, at which i get my violin back. I need to get 2 new mutes and a new dampit. I really like the new bridge. It's cut a bit differintly than the one it replaced, but in a good way. And the rehaired bow plays so much better than it did before. Who knew that rehairing would make such a huge differnce. I still want to get a new bow, as i'm not fond of the lightness, nor the balance point of this one, but it's quit usable now. Thank you
muzikmaker21!

For several years, in high school, and periodically for a few years after, i was in a quartet with a brilliantly talented cellist named Buffy Beverage. Second year of HS, we had a sub in math one day. She passed around a sheet, asking us to write our names for attendance. The sheet made its way around the room, and back to the sub. She looked over the list.
Buffy raised her hand and says,
The whole class then begins defending Buffy, resulting in the sub writing a nastygram to our instructor, who nearly fell on the floor laughing on reading the note.
I live around the corner from Sugarberry Ct in Reston. That's the street Buffy lived on when we were in HS. Buffy had juvenile diabetes, and died 10 September 2003, due to the diabetes. Sometimes, like tonight, when i drive past Sugarberry Ct, it makes me sad. I'm working on forming a quartet now, which made passing the street tonight especially poignant.
This is not a bad thing. It's just a thing i felt like sharing.
Alright, who wrote, she queriedBuffy Beverage?
Buffy raised her hand and says,
I did.
So what's your real name?
Buffy Beverage
No it is not. No one would be named Buffy Beverage
