The 1st and 4th of July are two of my favourite holidays of the year: Canada Day and Independence Day respectively. They were the 2 holidays a year that we always observed as a family, and Dad was around for, not having to work.

Of all the Canada Days, the one in (i forget if it was in '82 or '83) when we attended the groundbreaking for the new Embassy of Canada in Washington, D.C.\Ambassade du Canada à Washington. Today, it's a beautiful building at 501 Pennsylvania Ave NW. We kids had a blast tying red and white balloons together and floating 300-odd of them across Penn Ave and hovering them near the National Gallery of Art East Building.

Today, i had a total blast. I hung with loreleisays and her hubby, and our mutual friend Elizabeth (who has invited me to her new place in Messina Province in Sicily :D ). We hit the Nats v Marlins game, in which Ryan Zimmerman hit a walk-off 3-run homer in the bottom of the 9th, on 2 strikes, 2 outs. I'm SO glad we stayed till the end.

After the game, back into the Metro to Rosslyn, where the food was waiting in a cooler in my car. Loreleisays' hubby and i went to the car to get the food. As we were crossing the Skywalk bridge over Forty Myer Dr, we saw a flash of lighting, and simultaneously, heard a deafening clap of thunder. We scurried across the bridge, and took shelter at the church entrance, before deciding to get the stuff before the weather got worse. Ha!

We got the stuff, turned to back up the stairs as the skies opened up to pour yet more water, with wind making waves of water on the sidewalk, then went up the stairs, and had ANOTHER close call with the lightning; we ducked under a building with an awning, and walked around the corner, where we stood for a few as it hailed. When the hail stopped, we continued down the stairs, back by the church, across the bridge, and dripping, back underground to the Metro.

We all rode to Arlington Cemetery, walked a bit and then joined a huge group for a cookout at a fabu site along the George Washington Memorial Parkway (usually called the GW Parkway, but aka GWMP, or gwump, as one of my friends calls it). Much food was had by all, wonderful conversations, and one of the nicest fireworks displays we've seen here in years.

What a wonderful day. :D
