Stupid-ass Pollworkers
Nov. 7th, 2006 04:53 pmI just learned that someone on my flist has been denied a vote becuase they had no driver's license, but only a student ID, which is a valid ID according to State and Local law where they live. This has been confirmed with the board of elections in that county. I encourage you to GO BACK AND DEMAND YOUR RIGHT TO VOTE.
Print out the web page listing the valid IDs, and CALL the board of elections from the check-in table if needed to get it through their thick skulls. Yes, confrontation can be no fun, but dammit, you have a Constitutional right to cast a vote!

I'm planning on using my govt issued work id. as that is all that is required after the first time voting. My DW will have to show her drivers license.

Date: 2006-11-08 03:51 am (UTC)there's a new federal rule...
Date: 2006-11-08 12:40 am (UTC)if you do not have that ID, you may still cast a provisional ballot, which typically gets counted the next day if-and-only-if the race is close enough that the provisional ballots could make a difference--then if they do make a difference in the outcome, the voter's eligibility must be validated...
the bottom line I am hearing is that if you believe you are registered and entitled to vote DO NOT LEAVE YOUR POLLING PLACE WITHOUT CASTING A BALLOT, even if you are forced to cast a provisional ballot.

Date: 2006-11-08 06:57 pm (UTC)One provision, in summary:
"Allows first-time voters to cast provisional ballots if valid identification is not provided by the voter"
[or, otherwise translated: if you haven't voted before in the jurisdiction--state or territory--you must show photo ID in order to cast a "regular" ballot].

By the way, a lot of mailed ballots were made provisional this year because people didn't read the fine print and send in a copy of their ID, utility bill, or other permissible document with their ballot.
