We're trying to set up a wireless router with our Comcast IP service. Thus far, we have been unsuccessful. We've tried entering the info the DHCP gave us into the router, but cannot connect through it, neither by wire nor by wireless. Any of you got any suggestions? Thanks!

EDIT: Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] sungo, i checked the modem doc, and found that the modem requires a crossover cable for connecting to a router. So a-shopping we will go! Further update once that option is given a go.

What router is it? (I'm on the various IM services if you prefer to chat more realtime.)

No IM on this machine, else i'd opt for that. It's a Linksys WRT54GS, which is a Wireless-G broadband router.

Yup. I have the very same router on comcast. Is the router also the cable modem or is the router plugged into the cable modem from comcast? Or, potentially, did you get the wireless router from comcast?

The modem was bought. It's a Motorola SB5120 SURFboard cable modem which is connected directly to the wall, to which is connected the router. None of the equipment except for the coax from the wall to the modem came from Comcast.

Does comcast know that you bought a new modem? They won't have a problem with it but they have to authorize the new modem's MAC address.

Yep, that's been done. The modem connected to the PC has been working fine for about 6 weeks, and Comcast is aware of that, and that has been taken care of.

Oh, and the modem works fine connected on the PC. The DHCP from the modem to the router is what is not working.

How very odd. Are you using a normal ethernet cable between the modem and the router or are you using a crossover cable?

What is the label on the port that you're plugging into on the router?

We've tried ports 1 & 4. You want to call me if that would be easier: 571.244.6862?
