  1. bears:
What can i say. I like my men as hairy as i am.
  2. chocolate:
Summer of 2001, my sister, her son, my partner of the time, and i went to a reunion of my father's family. Our great-aunts Ruth and Betty coordinated the food. Everyone brought what they were asked to bring, plus a chocolate dessert. End result, 50% of all food present was a chocolate dessert. The 2 desserts that did not contain chocolate, the apple pie and the berry cobbler, had chocolate sauce on the side. We finally understood that it was genetic, and not just from our mother. Dad was an outlier on this one.
  3. dark chocolate:
If it's not at least 60% cacao, is it really worth eating?
  4. freedom of the press:
The people MUST know what is happening, from an independent source, or preferably, sources. The MUST be allowed to discuss such, and to assemble in protest or support, as they see fit.
  5. historical fiction:
This is the genre i have in common with my mother. Sci-fi is the one i share with my father. I read sci-fi mostly to escape. I read historical fiction when i want to escape, but also want to learn something. It's also fun what people do with the genre.
  6. liberty:
I think you, and everyone, should be able to walk down the street naked if that's what they want. If it offends someone, they should look away. You, and everyone, should be free to travel where they will, when they will. You, and everyone, should be free to worship whom, and as, they please. (Though i, personally, must draw the line at human sacrifice, at least for now.) Fell like speaking up? Then you should. But, you should be prepared to have someone contradict you, civilly or not. And you should be prepared to address them civilly, regardless how the addressed you. Discourse is good.
  7. nature:
A walk in the woods. Scrambling over rocks in the mountains. Watching the tide receding, and receding, and receding in the Bay of Fundy. Sitting in the shade of a tree. The scent of honeysuckle hanging in the humid air, punctuated now and again by the smell of tomato vine. Laying in the grass staring at the stars, longing.
  8. public transit:
I believe strongly in this. From 1990 to 2004, i owned a car for an aggregate of 2.5 years. It was easy getting around Fairfax, Boston, and DC on buses and trains. I bought a car when i moved to Reston, after a year in Chantilly without one; i needed to get to work. Though now i drive 2mi to a parking lot, where i get a bus to the subway to go to work. Supposedly in in 6 years, there will be a metro station about 2mi from my house, then 5 years after that, 5 blocks from it. We'll see; i may not even live there by then. Build transit, not roads. Happily, i live in the DC area, which has prevented more highway miles from being built than any metro area other than SF. Now if only the transit kept up with the lack of roads.
  9. space:
Galaxies, clusters, quasars, stars, planets. (I've always wanted to hesp colonize another planet.) Open plains, towering mountains, a marshy meadow by the river. (I appreciate what i have, truly.) Bookshelves in the living room, the dining room, the bedroom... (Someday i'll have a house with enough kitchen, a BIG room just for the books, and a bathtub big enough to fit ALL of me in.)
  10. tarot:
I like mysticism in general, and this is an area which i intuit well, and have been learning. It's interesting the variety of divination decks that are out there, some tarot, some merely tarot-derived directly or indirectly.
