That response fascinates me as a long-time word-puzzle gamer. In the context of the original game, it was not that part of the clue that baffled a few people, rather it was the 'kitchen implement' or 'tweezer-like kitchen implement'.

I understand entirely where you are coming from, and i agree that QANTAS has not a U and that it is an acronym. I do not, however see this as a valid complaint, as word-puzzle clues are often oblique and/or not precisely literal.

Part of it is annoyance with myself, since I've always had an improbably extensive vocabulary, and I also have quite a few Australian friends, and I should have known "quantong" - except I'd never heard of it before. (I didn't eat very much fruit when I was in Australia - I was much more interested in Tim Tams and chocolate-covered candied ginger, and, yes, I did try Vegemite.)

You might be interested in a vocabulary game (http://www.freerice.com) that also accomplishes something useful, namely donating rice to the United Nations World Food Program.

Free Rice rocks! Quantong came from Babble (http://www.playbabble.com).

i just tried Babble - I saw you in the chat pane. But whatever game is going on in chat doesn't seem to have anything at all to do with the "find-a-word" game I was playing. I'm confused :-(

Yes, the chat is confusing at first, but if you read, you will come to grok. :) I obvserved the chat for 18 months before participating in it.

I got the distinct impression that there is another game board somewhere, with the more esoteric game you're playing in chat - people keep referring to the board getting the "red screen of death", or complaining about the word lists the game is giving them.

Word list - see Lickety's Babble Clues, below the main grid.

Help above the chat explains rules/scoring.

"Red Screen of Death" means that in the chat, you get a burgundy bar saying "Word could not be added at this time, please try again later". That happens due to slow internet or babble server.

I looked at Lickety's Clues, but it didn't look like clues - just a way of organizing one's thoughts to maybe make it easier to solve. The game itself is fun, though.
