With special thanks to
dr_tectonic, here is draft 1 of the poem, with general intro, likely to be rewritten a bt, for tomorrow's service. Poem will evolve much from this point, but here's what tere is for now:
We of Gaia CIrcle, the eclectic, polytheistic, Earth-centered spirituality group here at UUCSS, welcome you all to the 3rd annual UUCSS Samhain Ritual. Samhain, not sam-hin, for in Irish mh is a double u. Samhain, when the Wheel of the year resets, ready to carry us forward. Samhain - Summer's End.
As Summer ends, days shorten,
as the Darkness that is Night,
little by little,
comes in turn to rule our World.
As Summer ends, we see
the trees change:
some stay green,
some go yellow,
others turn orange,
a few fiery red;
others are already bare.
As Summer ends,
the baren trees
set their buds in
preparation for Spring,
when some again
will be bare
and some trees again
will be green, while others
will burst forth in bloom
ephemeral, for our eyes to enjoy.
As Summer ends, those empty
trees let us see that Orion now
rises in the East
hunting Scorpius now
setting in the West,
forever chasing one another
through the dark,
in the eternal battle of
Life and Death.
As Summer ends, the days are
still pleasantly warm,
but the nights take on
an uncomfortable,
foreboding chill.
As Summer ends, we find
ourselves in this
sacred and holy time,
between the warm and
the cold, between
the light and the
impending dark
As Summer ends, we embrace
the Dark, and we perceive that our
dearly departed, the wee folk,
and others, walk among us; for
a scant few days as we all exist
together,
here,
between the worlds.
As Summer dies, Winter is born-
and now we are Between,
so set aside your day-to-day
existence and join us in honouring
those who have died before us.
