Temporary Crowns

Friday, they installed a temporary crown on molar 31.
Saturday, it broke. (on a barely 1.5mm diameter piece of carrot)
Monday, they installed a new temporary crown with stronger cement.
This morning, Wednesday, it broke. (on a very soggy piece of Golden Grahams)
I go back to the dentist this afternoon for my 3rd temporary crown on that tooth.

What are your experiences with temporary crowns?

K, so not just me, then. I was chewing on the other side, but one cannot keep everything neatly contained, even eating very slowly. I guess i'll stick to softer foods for a while. Sigh.

I've found palak paneer and shahi paneer to be soft and easy to deal with, also yellow dal.

I have had 4 crowns at one point or another and 3 have fallen out (sometimes multiple times). Since my last crown was on a root canal, when it fell out, they just left it out until the permanent one came it (as it did not last 2 days).

I think it all depends on how large the crown is, and where it is placed. I found that if the crown was just the top of the tooth for strength, it held there as a temp almost perfectly, but if the crown was more than half the tooth it was the sideways pushing of random food (and not the chewing) that knocked it lose (but each tooth location and crown shape is different).

I also think grinding is more dangerous than just simple chewing (but yea carrots did me in one time as well).

It is almost impossible to eat healthy without crunching (just about all fruits and vegetables or at least the ones I am willing to eat :p) .

Crowns are a fact of life for some of us, and temp crowns just kind of suck, but they are better than nothing (sometimes :p)

Probably so. I grind at night, which i told them at intake, and the woman who prepped today's temporary crown - with permanent cement this time - mentioned.

I concur about the eating healthily w/out crunching, though yellow dal, palak paneer, shahi paneer, yogurt, eggs, and well-steamed veggies can go a long way on that count. Not to mention vitamin-enhanced fruit smoothies.

I don't think I've had any trouble with mine but I may have just blocked it out of my memory as being too horrible to remember. I have nightmares about breaking teeth. Which I did last year almost the day after we got to Virginia!

Actually, I had the exact opposite experience- a temporary crown that lasted at least 6 months. I kept putting off getting the permanent installed, to my dentist's dismay.

Most of my temps last a good while, but I try not to chew anything even remotely hard. ::sigh::

Good luck...
