Went to court today for the Reckless Driving and the expired inspection offences. Got a continuance to 23 Aug, and hired a lawyer; thanks to [livejournal.com profile] sharrainchains for the reference. He's asked that i get my spedometer callibrated, which i shall do.

After court and the lawyer, i visited the Virginia Epmployment Commission, and was told that i can get a maximum of 4 weeks paid out onec i accept an offer, but i need an offer with a date ~4 weeks out. So must call employer to get that, or just go cashier again for a spell, as that would pay about the same as unemployment would.

I just got a call from a recruiter for a position in the same organization that i've agreed to work for. Any of yall speak French and want to come work at Customs, too?

Work location is in Springfield, really Newington, VA.

I just checked my copies of the paperwork i turned in for the clearance. Sure enough, i did enter 8/2005 is my HS start date. Wacky. What's a few decades. At least i got the completion date right.

Tonight, i am restless; restless like i haven't been in some time. I've paced. I've tried calling people. Played a few rounds of tennis and bowled some on the Wii. May have to go for a walk.

Bun-bun is doing very well, we let him roam a good bit, which has improved his confidence and mood a good bit. He and Feldspar play some, chasing each other. Jasper is a bit afraid of him. Jasper spent his first 18 months in a househould with a big log-ear who thumped loudly, and i'm guessing may have nipped him. He and Bun-bun have sniffed, but Jasper is yet leery.

Okay, i think i'll stop now.

Did any of you help me move to the Apartment on Columbia Pike in Arlington, VA, to which i moved from 2517 University Pl NW in DC? That was in 2003.

Or maybe you helped move me from the apartment to Chantilly, VA?

[livejournal.com profile] nadyalec, do you have contact information for Tina? Also, might i use you as a personal reference for the investigation?

Tomorrow: Entrevista telefónica en español para el trabajo a CBP para soportar a los usadores de ACE.

Yes, a federal agency is going to interview me in Spanish because Spanish fluency a a requirement for the position. This comes with an overnight shift, but pays 12% more than my last job.

Friday: Interview at 10:00 GMT-4 for Help Desk Manager at B-Line Medical. If i get this one, it'll be a 27% pay increase over last job, even allowing for the longer commute to Calverton. I had a phone interview with them 2 weeks ago.
dcseain: Cast shot of me playing my violin in role of minstrel in the Two Gentlemen of Verona (Default)
I had a very wonderful last couple of days. Let's go backwards, shall we:
  • Monday 2 Apr: Part 1 of interview for a job supporting ACE for CBP. Part 2 will be in Spanish, via telephone on Wednesday. Plus: it pays well, and comes with a Secret clearance. Minus: It's night shift, 19-7 or 21-9.
  • Sunday 1 Apr: Got home at 5, slept through church, oops, i was supposed to be there for the middle-schoolers, slept through a gaming session i'd RSVP'd yes to, and slept some more.
  • Saturday 31 March: I got to go to dinner at Lonestar with [livejournal.com profile] nosebeepbear, [livejournal.com profile] supremeherptile, and [livejournal.com profile] not_the_pope, i make a nice meal of sides there, and then i helped [livejournal.com profile] not_the_pope sink a bowling alley. My years of helpdesk experience actually aided nicely in figuring out how to do that. Later, [livejournal.com profile] scruffycritter joined us. Much fun was had by all. Somewhere in there, [livejournal.com profile] nosebeepbear and [livejournal.com profile] not_the_pope and i went to Giant for Chocolate, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] palmwiz.
  • Friday 30 March: Gaming [livejournal.com profile] chez_turtle YAY!
  • Thursday 29 March: Went to the [livejournal.com profile] nookery and visited and cooked with Marc, and got to spend time with the other Nookizens, too. (If you're not in the know, The Nookery is a house, inhabited by the 4 Nookizens, comprising 2 Nookerinas and 2 Nookerites; it's a very, very happy place.)

Cold mostly gone, as is the swelling in the throat - the steroids and rest and the humidifier and much water did their jobs. Um. I think that's all for now.

Thing the first:

I have gotten so many responses to posting my resume that i am completely overwhelmed. I had a phone interview today, which will result in an in-person interviwe later this week at Datatel. They seem a decent environment, and are an easy commute, as they're in the Fair Lakes part of Fairfax. I have an in-person interview with a recruiter in Bethesda tomorrow. Whee.

Thing the second:

I need a good vegan cake recipe. I have a frosting already. Suggestions?

Just now, i updated my resume, and posted to Monster and Dice. Tomorrow i follow up on a couple of job leads. By Monday, i should file with VEC for benefits, and search through available state and local jobs in my region.

For once, staying up until 03:00 accomplished something.
dcseain: Cast shot of me playing my violin in role of minstrel in the Two Gentlemen of Verona (Default)
that Whole Foods Market Arlington has asked me to come back. They fired my former supervisor for all the reasons i rebelled against her, and the store leadership has changed. Nice of them to think of me. It's the first time i've been contacted by a former employer to ask me to return.

I doubt i'll go back, as the pay sucks compared to what i do now, but it's nice to have options.
dcseain: Cast shot of me playing my violin in role of minstrel in the Two Gentlemen of Verona (Default)
Well, today's my last day here at DOD/USTRANSCOM/SDDC. I've been given my check-out papers, and thought i'd share the last fortune to come out of my lunch here:

Soon you will be sitting on top of the world
May that it be so. I'll be checking out of here in about an hour. On to new things. At least they said i can come back if i'd like, which is nice.

I turned in notice to the DoD people today. My last day working for SDDC in Alexandria will be 28 Oct. I'll start with Managed Objects at 9 AM on the 31st. I'm really looking forward to the new gig.

Job Update

dcseain: Cast shot of me playing my violin in role of minstrel in the Two Gentlemen of Verona (Default)
I have the offer in hand. First time i've gotten one via PDF. I am to start with Managed Objects not later than the 31st of October. So Monday i'll find out when i may leave DoD. :) I feel good about this opportunity. Hopefully i'll be able to make the best of it. Bonus, it pays 25% more than here, so my financial situation will be MUCH better. That's a load off, to say the least. Good things always happen on the 13th of the month for me. That has been a constant throughout my life. Thirteen is my friend.
dcseain: Cast shot of me playing my violin in role of minstrel in the Two Gentlemen of Verona (Default)
The interviews at Managed Objects went quite well. An offer will be forthcoming. So, ere long no more commute to Alexandria. It will be replaced with a much more pleasant commute to Tysons Corner/Westpark. YAY!

I was interviewed by the CEO, the person who will supervise me, the department head, another member of the department, the HR person consecutively. I'm looking forward to working there. I'm thinking i'll give notice at current job on Monday.
dcseain: Cast shot of me playing my violin in role of minstrel in the Two Gentlemen of Verona (Default)
Ok. I think you all know that i've started at DoD. It's an interim job most likely, as i'm not thrilled with it, even though i don't mind it. It is more technical than my last position, which is kind of funny since i worked at a software company. On Thursday at 1400 i inteview with another software company, Plateau Systems, in Ballston. It sounds like more fun; gov't environments and i don't mesh ideally. I find them stressful. They're always going cheap and half-assed about stuff. It is less than ideal to say the least.

Anyway, the question:

If you were to dictate what i did for a living, what would i do?

Job Update

dcseain: Cast shot of me playing my violin in role of minstrel in the Two Gentlemen of Verona (Default)
Huh. The DoD thing is different that what they told me in the interview. They're going to have me doing User Acceptance Testing and Documentation of the new software system instead of direct help desk. This makes this position much more appealing.

Oddly, due to the high price of gas it is cheaper to take a $3 each way bus and a $1.80 each way metro ride to work as opposed to driving. I never would've thought it'd be possible for Metro to be cheaper. But there it is. As of tomorrow, i will be taking the Fairfax Connector 989 from Reston to Pentagon City, and then the yellow line to Eisenhower Ave, which is conveniently next to the building.
dcseain: Cast shot of me playing my violin in role of minstrel in the Two Gentlemen of Verona (Default)
Ok.

DoD wants me to come in at 1400 for orientation.
Giesecke & Devrient America is still interested; i should hear more today.
Nextel is still interested; i should know more tomorrow.

Dod is available now. Nextel i can walk to and pays 10% more. G&D has good advancement opportunities. Guess we'll see...

EDIT: I'm starting DoD 16 Aug at 09 (GMT-4). I will stick with it until something closer to home comes along. I doubt they'll match the high pay the other jobs come with.
dcseain: Cast shot of me playing my violin in role of minstrel in the Two Gentlemen of Verona (Default)
Today, I accepted an offer from TMSI to work for the Surface Deployment and Distribution Command (SDDC) of the US Dept. of Defense.

The insurance company will have me if i want to do it. I'm not absolutely certain that a life in sales is right for me.

I'm still waiting to hear from Oberthur, which is the position i'd really rather have. Though 2 offers from 4 interviews isn't bad.

I think i'll keep looking though.

This Week

Recap of M-R, with details of interviws )
Friday:
Today, i finally got around to going to the lab for the pre-employment drug test for Oberthur, as W & R i was too busy, and the place closes at 16. I'm following up with several recruiters today also. It looks like i'll have 2-3 offers by the middle of next week. Fwee! What a week.

This weekend:
Tomorrow, i'm going gaming at the [livejournal.com profile] nookery, which will be a lot of fun; i adore the people there. Sunday i'm going to church, as the sermon "After the Welcoming Congregation, What?" pertains to me, as it specifically address the now that we're a Welcoming [to LGBTs] Congregation, and have been for a decade, now what? Not sure about that afternoon.
dcseain: Cast shot of me playing my violin in role of minstrel in the Two Gentlemen of Verona (Default)
Ok. Three interviews in four days isn't half bad. It's amazing what actively searching for work will do. Though i've noticed i'm getting a much better response from dice.com than from monster.com. I guess that ought not surprise me, as dice specializes in tech work. Anyway...

I've a 09:30 tomorrow (Wednesday) with Oberthur Card Systems in Chantilly, off of 50 west of 28. I talked with them at 16:15 today, and Bracken said she'd email directions, which she finally did 20 min ago. At any rate, that's set. Just need to make sure i've appropriate clothes in order; i'll do that this evening.

Thursday at 12:30 i'm interviewing at Bankers Life and Casualty, also in Chantilly, off of Willard Rd. This is for a Branch Office Manager position; i have management experience, and banking and retail experience, after all. This one is mostly for the interview i think, as i'm not sure it's an ideal job, but i figured what the hell, it wouldn't hurt to talk to them. Interview practice is good. Though as a general thing, if i can get a face-to-face interview, i often get the job.

We'll see.
dcseain: Cast shot of me playing my violin in role of minstrel in the Two Gentlemen of Verona (Default)
I had the interview at G&D Americas today. It went well. M, the hiring supervisor told me that i am 'grossly overqualified' for the position, and is passing my resume to another manager who is hiring trainers for their field engineers. I'm still in the running for the job i interviewed for, as it's a good in into the company, tho M said she'd let me go for the training job if the other manager is interested.

I enjoyed the interview process. I Had a brief chat with H, the hiring manager, and a longer one with M, the hiring supervisor - i'm not certain that i've their titles correct, but i think the relationship is correct. It was the first time i'd been interviewed in Spanish. I've interviewed people in that language before, so i knew the vocabulary, but it was different from the other side.
dcseain: Cast shot of me playing my violin in role of minstrel in the Two Gentlemen of Verona (Formal)
Today, I got a call from a recruiter at 09:02 EDT. She's submitting me for a position at a satellite company in Ashburn, the description of which sounds absolutely ideal. It's a 6-month temp-to-hire deal, and the hiring company will pay for a Secret clearance if the decide to hire. I'm hoping it results in an interview.

I got an email from another recruiter with whom i spoke on Tuesday, and followed up with him on the phone. It's a helpdesk gig at Geisecke & Devrient in Sterling. It pays less than the one above, and comes with three shifts which rotate monthly: 06-15, 10-19, or 12-21, plus 1 weekend a month. Very less than ideal work hours, but it'd do for now. I'll interview with the company on Monday at 10.

I spoke with a third recruiter who called at 11:15 about a different, short-term, position in Ashburn. He said he was going to email me with address/directions to them (they're in Herndon near Worldgate), but i've not received an email, and the number he called me from is continuously busy. It was hard to hear him when he called; he seemed to be in a very noisy open office or call-centerish environment. So, as a result, i've no clue which company he rang from. Sigh.
